Google Business Profile Photo Optimization

Photos aren't decoration , they're a ranking signal. Google's algorithm looks at quantity, quality, recency, geo-tagging, category coverage and engagement. Here's what each one means and how we optimize for it.

Quantity threshold

Profiles with fewer than 5 photos rank below profiles with 20+. Up to about 50 photos, more is better. Beyond 50, returns diminish. We aim for 20-30 active photos.

Recency , the most-missed signal

Photos older than 12 months stop contributing to rankings. Google wants fresh signals. We add 5-10 fresh photos every month to keep the freshness signal active.

Geo-tagging via EXIF

Photos with geo-coordinates in their EXIF metadata help Google verify your location and match the photo to your service area. We process every photo through a geo-tagging tool before upload.

Category coverage

Google groups photos: Exterior, Interior, Team, Products, At Work, Identity. Profiles with photos across all 6 categories outrank profiles with 30 photos all in one category. We balance the gallery deliberately.

Original vs. stock

Google detects stock photos via reverse image search and weights them as zero. Worse, repeated stock detection can flag the entire profile as low-trust. Always original photography.

Customer engagement

Photos that get viewed, clicked or saved by users boost rankings. Owner-uploaded photos that perform well are amplified. We monitor which photos engage best and produce more like them.
