How do I check my Google Business Profile for free?
Sign in to your Business Profile, open a private browser window for the searches, and work down the table. Each pass mark comes from Google's Business Profile guidelines and help pages, not from a scoring formula. Mark every row pass or fail before you change anything, then fix the fails from the top.
| # | Check | Pass if | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ownership and verification | In More > Business Profile settings > People and access, you are an Owner, no ex-employee or former agency holds ownership, and the profile shows as verified. | Only owners can add and remove users. Verifying is the first item in Google's own tips for local ranking. Locked out? See owner lockout recovery. |
| 2 | Business name | Matches your signage, website and stationery. No city, keywords, taglines, phone numbers or URLs added. | Google's guidelines rule these additions out, and Google can suspend profiles that break its guidelines. |
| 3 | Categories | The primary category is the most specific one that completes “This business is a…”. Extra categories (up to 9) cover core services only. | Google advises using as few categories as possible. Ask for exact names through our free GBP category finder. |
| 4 | Address or service area | Storefront: a real address with permanent signage, not a P.O. box or unstaffed virtual office. Service-area business: address hidden, up to 20 service areas, within about 2 hours’ drive of your base. | These are Google's eligibility rules. An ineligible address or an oversized service area is a guideline breach. |
| 5 | Phone, website and hours | A phone number that reaches this location. A website link to your own page for this location. Regular hours match reality, with special hours set for holidays. | Google does not allow numbers or URLs that redirect to someone else's landing page, and says complete, accurate details make a profile more likely to show in local results. |
| 6 | Description | Up to 750 characters about the business itself. No URLs, HTML, prices or promotions. | These are Google's own limits for the field. Edits are reviewed before they go live. |
| 7 | Photos and video | Recent, real photos of your premises, team and work. JPG or PNG, 10 KB to 5 MB, ideally 720 × 720 px. Videos up to 30 seconds. | Adding photos and videos is one of Google's listed ways to improve local ranking. Photos should show the real business. |
| 8 | Reviews | You reply to reviews, ask every customer, and never offer an incentive or ask only happy customers. | Google's policy bans paid or incentivised reviews and selective asking. A direct review link makes asking everyone easy. |
| 9 | Duplicate profiles | Searching your business name and phone number on Google Maps returns one profile per location. | Google allows one profile per business. Duplicates cause problems with how your details display on Maps and Search. |
| 10 | Listings elsewhere (NAP) | Name, address and phone match on your website, Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Connect), Bing Places, Yelp and Facebook. | Out-of-date listings send customers to old numbers and get copied onward. Request a free check through our NAP consistency checker. |
| 11 | Performance baseline | In the Performance report, note calls, website clicks, direction requests and the search terms people used. | This is your before-and-after. The searches metric updates at the start of each month, so compare month to month. |
| 12 | Real ranking check | Search your main service in a private window at your business, then again from a few spots across your service area, on your phone as you travel or with a geo-grid tool. | Distance is one of Google's three local ranking factors, so one search from your desk is not your ranking. |

What does a GBP checker miss outside the profile?
A GBP checker only looks at the profile. Google's prominence factor also counts how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, so an audit worth your time checks what sits around the profile too:
- Your location page. The same name, address and phone as the profile, the services you listed, a tap-to-call number and LocalBusiness structured data.
- Listings on other sites. Apple Business, Bing Places, Yelp and your industry directories, all with identical details. Fixing these at scale is what citation building is for.
- Reviews against competitors. Count, recency and replies, compared with the three businesses above you, not with an industry average.
- Rankings across the service area. A geo-grid shows where you appear and where you drop out, which a single search cannot.
- Tracking. A UTM tag on the profile's website link, so visits from your profile show up separately in your analytics.
If most of these fail, the fix is bigger than the profile, and that is the job of our local SEO services.
Can you trust a GBP checker or local SEO score?
Automated GBP checkers and local SEO score checkers are a fast first pass. The score is a weighted total that the tool's maker chose. Google publishes no local SEO score, so two tools can grade the same profile differently, and neither number is your ranking. Use the list of failed items, not the total. Many tools also still score things that do not help, or that break Google's rules. Be wary when a tool tells you to:
- Add your city or keywords to the business name. Google's guidelines prohibit it, and Google can suspend profiles that break them.
- Fill every category slot. Google says to use as few categories as possible. Add a category only if it describes what the business is.
- Turn on Business Profile chat. Google switched off its built-in chat on 31 July 2024. The replacement is a Chat field in your contact details that links to WhatsApp or text messages, and Google offers it only in select regions. A tool that marks you down for it may be scoring an option you cannot switch on.
- Trust one rank number. Because distance is a ranking factor, your position changes across town. One check from one location is a sample, not your ranking.
- Expect a ranking jump from a 100% complete profile. Completeness helps relevance. Distance and prominence still decide who wins, and Google says no one can pay for a better local ranking.
Automated tools also cannot see who owns the profile, whether it was suspended before, or why Google rejected an edit. Those questions need someone looking at the account.
When is a DIY GBP check not enough?
The checklist fixes most problems an owner can see. Bring in help when the problem is one you cannot see from the profile:
- You dropped out of the Map Pack after an edit or an update. Diagnose the cause before changing anything else; see Map Pack ranking drop recovery.
- Every row passes, but competitors still outrank you. That is a relevance and prominence problem, which is what Google Business Profile optimization works on.
- You are not ranking in the areas you serve. Improving position across a service area is the core of our Google Maps SEO service.
- You pass today but have no time to keep it that way. Reviews, photos, hours and edits need monthly attention, which is what ongoing GBP management covers.
Free GBP audit tool: common questions
Is this Google Business Profile audit tool really free?
Yes. The 12-point checker on this page is free to use with no sign-up, and the expert audit is free too, with no credit card. If you want us to make the fixes afterwards, we quote a plan based on what the audit finds. If you don't, you keep the audit and the checklist.
What does a GBP checker look for?
A GBP checker compares your profile with Google's guidelines and with your competitors: ownership, verification, business name, categories, address or service area, phone, website, hours, description, photos, reviews, duplicate profiles and listings elsewhere. A good one also checks where you actually rank across your service area, not from a single spot.
How is a free local SEO audit different from a GBP audit?
A GBP audit covers the Business Profile itself. A local SEO audit adds everything around it: your website's location page and structured data, listings on other directories, reviews against competitors, and rankings across your service area. Most businesses need both, because Google's prominence factor also counts the websites that link to you and your reviews.
How often should I audit my Google Business Profile?
Run the full checklist once a quarter, and a quick check after any change to your name, address, category or website. Google reviews edits before they go live, and a new address means verifying the business again. Also re-check whenever calls or direction requests fall in your Performance report.
Can an audit tool tell me why my profile was suspended?
No automated tool can see Google's internal reason. Start with the notice in your Business Profile, then compare your name, address, categories and recent edits with Google's guidelines, the fields they are strictest about. If the profile is already suspended, read our Google Business Profile suspension fix before you appeal.
Will a complete profile guarantee a higher Maps ranking?
No. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. A complete, accurate profile helps relevance, but distance depends on where the searcher is, and prominence comes from reviews, links and how well known you are. Google also states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
Is a local SEO score the same as my Google ranking?
No. A local SEO score checker adds up its own checks on your profile, listings, reviews and website, weighted however its maker chose. Google does not publish a local SEO score. Your ranking is where you appear for a real search from a real location, so measure it directly with row 12 of the checker above.
Do I have to give you access to my Business Profile?
No. The free audit works from your public profile and the Maps results around it, so you do not add us as a user. Owner-only data, such as the Performance report, stays with you. If you want it included, send screenshots on WhatsApp after you submit the form.
