Verifying your Google Business Profile is the gateway to ranking. Without it, you can't appear in Maps or local searches. Here's how each verification method works in 2026, which to choose for your business, and what to do when verification fails. 2026 update: Google now assigns video verification to most small businesses by default - postcards are the exception. See our dedicated video verification guide for exactly what to film.
The 4 verification methods explained
- Postcard verification (most common). Google mails a postcard with a code to your business address. Takes 5-14 days to arrive. Enter the code at business.google.com.
- Phone verification (fastest). Google calls or texts you with a code. Available for some businesses. Use a directly-billed phone number, VOIP and forwarded numbers often get rejected.
- Email verification. Available for some businesses with email matching the business domain. Code sent to your business email.
- Video verification. Record a continuous unedited video showing your exterior signage, registered address, and category-relevant equipment. Reviewed by Google within 5 business days.
Which method to choose
Pick the fastest one Google offers you. Phone (instant) > Email (24-72h) > Video (5 days) > Postcard (5-14 days). Some categories (especially home services) require video.
If your method fails, request a different one through the dashboard. Common failures: postcard never arrived (resend), phone verification rejected (use carrier mobile), video rejected (re-record showing all required elements).
Avoid these mistakes
Don't submit multiple verification requests rapidly , locks the profile. Don't use a virtual office address , auto-rejection. Don't record video without showing exterior signage and category-specific equipment.
