Reviewed by Memona, Google Business Profile specialist at GMB Experts USA (LinkedIn)

Short answer: To optimize a Google Business Profile in 2026, verify it, pick the most specific primary category, complete every field (services, hours, attributes, description), keep your name, address and phone identical across the web, add real photos, and earn and answer reviews within Google's rules. Owner Q&A is gone, so put common answers in your description and website FAQ.

This is the checklist version of Google Business Profile optimization: 23 actions in the order we work through them, each checked against Google's current Business Profile Help pages in October 2026. If you would rather hand it over, our GMB optimization service covers every item below.

In this guide

  1. Foundation (5 items)
  2. Visibility (6 items)
  3. Content and engagement (5 items)
  4. Reviews (3 items)
  5. Authority (4 items)
  6. What to drop from older checklists
  7. How long until each item moves the needle

Foundation (5 items)

  1. Claim and verify the profile. Google chooses the verification methods it offers you. Video verification is now common, and Google recommends it when you are eligible; live video call, phone, text, email and postcard also exist.
  2. Use your real-world business name. Google does not allow unnecessary information or marketing taglines in the name. Keywords added to the name are a common suspension trigger.
  3. Pick the most specific primary category that describes the business as a whole, not one service.
  4. Add secondary categories only for things you actually do. Extra categories that do not match the business dilute relevance.
  5. Write the description (up to 750 characters): what you do, who for, and where. No links, prices or promotional phone numbers.

Visibility (6 items)

  1. Choose storefront, service-area or hybrid. A service-area business hides its address and can list up to 20 service areas within about two hours' drive of its base.
  2. Set regular hours and special hours for every US holiday you close or change hours.
  3. Fill in every attribute that applies to you.
  4. Build a complete services list using the words customers use. Prices are optional.
  5. Add products if you sell items or fixed packages.
  6. Add a booking or appointment link if customers book online.

Content and engagement (5 items)

  1. Upload real photos of the exterior, interior, team and finished work. No stock images.
  2. Add new photos as your work changes. There is no quota; a profile that looks current converts better.
  3. Publish Google posts when you have a real update, offer or event. Posts older than six months are archived unless a date range is set.
  4. Answer common customer questions on your website FAQ and in your description. Google removed owner Q&A in December 2025; the Ask Maps feature now answers from your profile, reviews and photos.
  5. Check that the call button and website link work, and tag the website link with UTM parameters so you can see profile traffic in analytics.

Reviews (3 items)

  1. Ask every customer for a review with your direct review link. No incentives, no filtering out unhappy customers, and since April 2026 no staff review quotas.
  2. Reply to every review promptly. Google says helpful replies show you are responsive.
  3. Flag reviews that break Google's policy for removal. Owners cannot delete reviews themselves.

Authority (4 items)

  1. Make your name, address and phone identical on the main data aggregators and the directories that rank for your category.
  2. Add LocalBusiness structured data to your website that matches what the page shows.
  3. Link from your homepage to each service page so Google can connect your services to the profile.
  4. Track rankings monthly for your top 5 to 10 searches, from several points across your area.

What to drop from older checklists

Older checklists still list tactics that no longer exist or never had Google's support. Drop these:

  • Q&A seeding. Owner Q&A was removed in December 2025.
  • Turning on chat. Google removed Business Profile chat on July 31, 2024.
  • Weekly posting "because posts expire". Standard posts have not expired after a week since 2021.
  • Geotagging photos. Google's ranking guidance does not mention photo location data.
  • Keywords in the business name. It breaks the guidelines and is a common suspension cause.

How long until each item moves the needle

Foundation items count as soon as Google has re-read the profile, often within a few weeks. Visibility and content items compound over the following months. Reviews and citations take longer, because they depend on customers and third-party sites. Do items 1-15 first: they cover what Google names directly, relevance and complete, accurate information. A one-time GBP optimization is the fastest way to get those done correctly.

Updated October 9, 2026: removed Q&A seeding and chat, added video verification, service-area limits, post archiving and the April 2026 review rules. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which item has the biggest impact?

Item 3 (primary category) and items 17-19 (asking for and answering reviews). The category decides which searches you are eligible for; reviews feed what Google calls prominence.

How long does the full checklist take?

Initial completion: 4-6 hours for a single location. Ongoing maintenance (items 13-19 and 23): 2-3 hours per month.

Can I skip any items?

Items 10 and 11 can be skipped if you have no products or online booking. The rest apply to almost every business.

Can I still add questions and answers to my profile?

No. Google removed owner Q&A in December 2025. Put the answers customers need in your description, services and website FAQ, which Ask Maps and Google Search can read.
