AI Search Optimization for Local Business: How to Show Up in AI Answers

What Google, OpenAI and Microsoft confirm, what nobody outside them knows, and the work that helps.

How does a local business show up in AI search?

AI assistants mostly draw on sources that already exist: Google Search and your Business Profile for AI Overviews, AI Mode and Ask Maps, Bing for Copilot, and search providers plus partners such as Yelp for ChatGPT. The work is local SEO done well: a complete Business Profile, consistent listings, real reviews and indexable pages answering customer questions.

Nobody can guarantee a mention. Google, OpenAI and Microsoft do not publish how their assistants choose which business to name, and answers change with the person asking, their location and the wording.

Data sources

Where do ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI get local business information?

ChatGPT local business recommendations, Gemini answers and Google’s AI Overviews draw on different sources. This is what each company documents publicly as of September 2026. Where a company is silent, the table says so.

AssistantWhat the provider documentsWhat you control
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeDraw on Google Search and may run several related searches at once (“query fan-out”). A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be linked, and Google says normal SEO best practices apply. Google’s AI guide names Business Profile for local businesses. An indexable website and a complete, current Business Profile.
Ask Maps (Gemini in Google Maps)Google says it analyzes information on over 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million contributors, and personalizes answers using places the person has searched for or saved. Announced in March 2026 for the US and India.Business Profile details, photos and genuine reviews that describe the work.
Gemini appUses public information from Google Maps for places: addresses, descriptions, websites, ratings and opening hours. The same Business Profile data that Maps shows.
ChatGPT searchUses third-party search providers and OpenAI’s own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and may share the person’s location with trusted providers to find nearby business listings. Yelp says ChatGPT surfaces its reviews, ratings, photos and business details. OpenAI publishes no full list of local data sources and says placement is not guaranteed.Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site; keep your Yelp page and other major listings accurate.
Microsoft CopilotSends generated search queries to Bing and grounds its answer in the results.Your Bing Places listing and a site Bing can crawl.
Siri and Apple MapsApple Business, which replaced Apple Business Connect in April 2026, controls how your brand and locations appear across Apple Maps, Siri, Safari, Spotlight, Mail and Wallet.A claimed, complete Apple Business listing.

Perplexity and most other assistants do not document where their local business data comes from. Treat any list of their “ranking factors” as an educated guess.

Google AI Overviews

How do you show up in Google AI Overviews as a local business?

Google is unusually specific here. Its guidance says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, no AI text files to create and no special schema to add. The same SEO best practices apply to AI features as to Search overall. For a local business, that turns into this checklist:

  • Make sure your pages are indexed. Check the Page indexing report in Search Console. A page Google has not crawled cannot be cited.
  • Give each service its own page with specifics: what you do, where, for whom, how a job runs, what affects the price and which licences you hold. Google’s AI guide asks for “non-commodity” content and says generic tip lists add little unique insight.
  • Answer the questions customers ask on the phone, in plain words near the top of the page.
  • Keep your Business Profile complete and current: primary category, services, hours including holiday hours, service area, description and photos. Google’s AI guide names Business Profile as a way to be visible in AI responses, and its local ranking help says complete, accurate profiles are more likely to show up.
  • Use structured data that matches the page. LocalBusiness and Service markup help Google read your details, but they are not an AI switch.
  • Check you are not blocking yourself. A nosnippet or tight max-snippet tag, or a robots.txt rule against Googlebot, limits how your pages can be used.
  • Earn real mentions from local press, trade associations, sponsors and suppliers. Google warns that chasing inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it looks.

ChatGPT

How does ChatGPT decide which local businesses to recommend?

OpenAI has not published how ChatGPT ranks local businesses. What OpenAI and its partners have documented is where the information comes from:

  • The person’s location. ChatGPT estimates an approximate location from the IP address and can rewrite a question such as “good restaurants near me” into a local search (OpenAI’s own example becomes “top restaurants San Francisco”). Precise device location is used only if the person turns it on.
  • Search results and your website. The rewritten query goes to third-party search providers, and OpenAI’s crawler, OAI-SearchBot, fetches pages for ChatGPT search. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  • Listing partners. In August 2026 Yelp announced that ChatGPT surfaces Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details, and lets people request quotes from service providers.

What is not known: the full list of data providers, how ChatGPT weighs reviews against distance or website content, and why two people asking the same question see different names. That leaves three practical steps. Check that robots.txt and your CDN or firewall let OAI-SearchBot in. Claim your Yelp page and keep its hours, services and photos correct, but do not ask customers for Yelp reviews: Yelp’s guidelines tell businesses not to, and its software filters reviews that look solicited. Then publish the same facts on your website, Google and Bing so every source agrees. Our guide on how to get recommended by ChatGPT as a local business covers prompt testing in more depth.

Honest limits

What is known, and what isn’t, about how AI assistants pick businesses?

Most “AI SEO” advice is confident about things the platforms have never published. Here is how the common claims compare with what Google and OpenAI actually say.

Claim you will hearWhat the evidence says
“Add an llms.txt file and AI will recommend you.”Google says Google Search doesn’t use llms.txt or other AI text files, so creating one neither helps nor harms there. We have not found any major assistant that documents using it to choose local businesses.
“You need special AI schema.”Google says structured data is not required for its AI features and there is no special schema.org markup for them.
“Rewrite your site in short chunks for AI.”Google says there is no need to break content into small pieces or to write in a special way for AI.
“Get into lists and forums to be cited.”Google warns that seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it seems. Genuine local press and association listings are a different thing.
“Our tool shows your AI ranking.”Answers vary by person, location, wording and day, and Google warns against tools that claim to use internal Google metrics. A tool score is a sample, not a rank.
“Pay us and ChatGPT will recommend you.”Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed.

What is well supported is narrower: these assistants read data a business can improve. Google’s local ranking help says prominence is based partly on how many websites link to a business and how many reviews it has, and its AI guide points local businesses to Business Profile. Everything past that is informed testing, and we label it that way in reports.

Our service

What do LLM SEO services for a local service business include?

“LLM SEO” and “AI search optimization” are new labels for familiar work; Google’s own guide says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. For a plumber, dentist, law firm or contractor, LLM SEO comes down to the facts an assistant can find and cross-check about the business. Our engagement follows the same order every time:

  1. Baseline prompt set. We write the questions your customers actually ask, run them in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity from your service area, and record which businesses are named and which sources are cited.
  2. Business Profile fixes. Categories, services, hours, service area, attributes, description and photos, checked against Google’s guidelines. This is the same work as our Google Business Profile optimization service.
  3. Listings and entity consistency. The same name, address or service area and phone on Bing Places and Apple Business, Yelp, the major directories and the data aggregators that feed them, through citation building and cleanup.
  4. Website readiness. Crawl access for Googlebot, Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot, indexing checks, one clear page per service and area with specific facts, and LocalBusiness markup that matches the page.
  5. Reviews that describe the work. A steady request to every customer, no incentives and no filtering out unhappy customers, and prompt replies. See review management.
  6. Monthly re-check. The same prompts again, plus Search Console and GA4 data, in a short report that separates what the platforms confirm from what we observed.

What we will not sell you

  • An llms.txt file presented as a ranking fix. We will add one if you want it; it is harmless, but that is all.
  • “AI schema” or content chopped into chunks.
  • Bought mentions, paid listicles or fake reviews.
  • Guaranteed placement in any assistant.

Measurement

How do you track whether AI assistants recommend your business?

  • Search Console’s Generative AI performance report. It shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. Google rolled it out to all sites on 31 August 2026, but a site only sees it once it has enough impressions in those features. Clicks from AI features are counted in the standard Performance report under the “Web” search type.
  • GA4 referrals. Look for chatgpt.com (ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many links), gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. Clicks from mobile apps can arrive without a referrer and show as direct traffic.
  • A fixed prompt log. Run the same questions monthly from the same area and record who is named. The trend matters more than any single answer.
  • Ask new customers. “How did you find us?” on calls and forms is still the most reliable signal for AI referrals that analytics cannot see.

FAQ

AI search optimization: common questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT or Google’s AI?

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed. What you can improve is the information these systems read: your Business Profile, your listings on other directories, your reviews and your website.

Do I need an llms.txt file for AI search?

Not for Google. Google’s July 2026 guide says Google Search doesn’t use llms.txt or other AI text files, so creating one neither helps nor harms your visibility there. We have not found any major assistant that documents using one to choose local businesses. Publishing one is harmless, but it should not be the thing you pay for.

Does schema markup get me into AI Overviews?

Not by itself. Google says structured data is not required for its AI features and there is no special AI schema. LocalBusiness and Service markup still help Google read your details and can earn rich results, as long as the markup matches what the page visibly says.

Does ChatGPT use my Google Business Profile?

OpenAI has not said that it does. Its documented sources are third-party search providers, its own crawler and partners such as Yelp. Your Business Profile still feeds Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode, Ask Maps and Gemini, so keep it complete, and publish the same facts on your website and other listings where ChatGPT can find them.

Why does ChatGPT recommend a competitor instead of my business?

Usually because more of the sources it reads describe the competitor clearly: consistent listings, more reviews that name the service and the area, and pages that answer the question. Answers also change with the wording, the person’s approximate location and the day, so test the same prompts over several weeks before drawing conclusions.

How long does AI search optimization take?

There is no fixed timeline, and anyone who quotes one is guessing. Profile and listing fixes can be made quickly, but Google and other crawlers then have to revisit the changes before answers can reflect them. We re-run the same prompt set every month and report what changed, without promising a date.

Is AI search optimization different from local SEO?

Mostly it is local SEO done thoroughly. The differences are scope and measurement: more listings matter (Bing Places, Apple Business and Yelp as well as Google), your site must be open to AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, and progress is checked with repeat prompts and Search Console’s Generative AI report.
