Google Marked Your Verified Profile as a Duplicate: How to Get It Back

Updated 9 October 2026

Verified Google Business Profile marked as a duplicate of another profile

Short answer

What should you do when Google marks your verified Business Profile as a duplicate?

Google marks a profile as a duplicate when it believes another profile is already verified for the same business, and the marked one stops showing on Maps. First find that other profile: in Business Profile Manager the duplicate shows a Request access or View original link. If the surviving profile is yours, take control of it and move your details there. If it is a genuinely different business, Google says to contact support and appeal the duplicate status with signage evidence.

Want to remove duplicates you did not create? That is our duplicate listing removal service. This page is for when Google marked your profile.

Why it happened

Why did Google mark a long-verified profile as a duplicate?

Google’s help page on profiles marked as duplicate says profiles get that status when another profile is already verified for the same business. The marked profile no longer shows on Maps. Google says you do not have to delete it.

It usually follows a change around the business, not something you did this week:

  • An agency or a former employee verified a second listing for the same business.
  • A practitioner profile and the practice profile were treated as one business.
  • An old listing was claimed again after you moved.
  • A data-aggregator feed recreated the location and someone verified it.

A duplicate flag is not a suspension, so the appeals tool is not the first stop. If your notice says the profile is suspended, start with suspension recovery instead.

Find the other profile

Who owns the “other” profile and how do you find out?

  • In Business Profile Manager the duplicate shows Request access if someone else owns the original, or View original if you already do.
  • Search the business name on Google Maps while signed in. The surviving profile’s phone, website, photos and owner replies usually show who created it.
  • Check People and access on any other Google account your business, your staff or a past agency has used.

When two people both believe they own the listing, our guide to owner conflict resolution sets out the order of steps.

Pick the route

Request access or appeal: which comes first?

SituationRoute
The surviving profile is your businessRequest access. Google notifies the current owner, who has a short window to respond (3 days on Google’s help page today).
Two different, eligible businesses were mergedContact Business Profile support and appeal the duplicate status. For storefronts Google asks for evidence of permanent signage clearly showing both businesses.
You already own both profilesUse View original, keep the surviving profile and move your details, photos and services there.

To request access, find the business on Search or Maps, select the message that a profile already exists, choose Request access, complete the form and submit. If the owner ignores or denies it, the confirmation email may offer a way to verify. Our request access and owner lockout recovery page covers what to do when it stalls.

Do not create a third profile. It would be another duplicate.

Reviews

Can reviews be merged across the two profiles?

Google gives owners no merge button. Reviews stay on the profile they were written on. When Google merges duplicates itself, owners report that reviews sometimes carry over and sometimes do not; that is Google’s call.

  • Save a copy of your reviews now, with screenshots or an export from your review tools.
  • Once you own both profiles, ask Business Profile support whether reviews from the marked profile can be moved.
  • Do not ask customers to post their reviews again in bulk. A sudden wave of reposted reviews can draw the wrong kind of attention from Google.
Ex-staff and agencies

What if the duplicate is a former employee’s or agency’s profile?

  1. Request access from the surviving profile.
  2. If the request is denied or ignored, contact Business Profile support with proof that you run the business: an EIN letter, a license and a utility bill in the profile’s name and address.
  3. Once you have control, keep the profile you want, remove the other and clean up People and access.

If someone took the listing on purpose and changed your details, treat it as a hijack and follow hijacked profile recovery.

Reversal

Can a duplicate flag be reverted at all?

Google’s help page describes an appeal for one case only: two distinct, eligible businesses that were merged by mistake.

For a true duplicate of one business, owners in the Help Community report that Google rarely reverts the flag. The working route is to take control of the surviving profile.

If the surviving profile is the weaker one, with an old address or the wrong category, fix it once you have access rather than fighting for the marked profile.

How we fix it

How does GMB Experts handle a duplicate flag?

  1. Free diagnosis. We map both profiles, who owns each one and which route applies: access, appeal or a support case.
  2. Access or appeal. We prepare the access request, or the support case with signage evidence when two real businesses were merged.
  3. Consolidate. Details, photos, services and categories moved to the profile that stays.
  4. Stop it coming back. Our duplicate listing removal service cleans up the copies on data aggregators.
  5. A straight answer. Google decides whether a flag is reversed. We tell you which outcome is realistic.

FAQ

Profile marked as duplicate: common questions

What does “your profile has been marked as a duplicate” mean?

Google has decided that another profile is already verified for the same business, so the marked profile no longer shows on Maps. Google says you do not have to delete it. In Business Profile Manager it shows a Request access link if someone else owns the original, or View original if you do.

How do I request access to the original profile?

Find the business on Google Search or Maps while signed in, select the message that a profile already exists, choose Request access, complete the form and submit. Google notifies the current owner, who has a short window (3 days on Google’s help page today) to respond. If they ignore or deny it, your confirmation email may offer a way to verify, or you can contact Business Profile support with proof you run the business.

Can Google undo the duplicate flag?

Google’s help page describes an appeal only for the case where two distinct, eligible businesses were merged by mistake; for storefronts it asks for permanent signage that clearly shows both businesses. For a true duplicate of one business, owners in the Help Community report that Google rarely reverts the flag, and the working route is to take control of the surviving profile.

Will I lose my reviews?

Reviews stay attached to the profile they were written on. If Google merges the two, they may carry over, but Google does not promise it and gives owners no merge button. Screenshot or export your reviews now, then ask support about moving them once you own both profiles.

Should I just verify a new profile?

No. A third profile for the same business is another duplicate and can be suspended. Recover or take over the surviving profile, then remove the extras.

Updated 9 October 2026. Duplicate status, the Request access flow and the signage evidence for merged distinct businesses are described from Google's Help Center page 'Profiles marked as duplicate' as it read in October 2026; review-merge outcomes are owner-reported.
